Many of you who are beginners at this hobby would probably wonder why I’ve written this post on fish tank lighting. Don’t worry, I’ve felt the same way. When i was still a kid and didn’t know any better i just bought any kind of light bulb and stuck it on top of my aquarium. All the while making sure my aquarium looked good and nothing else. Apparently this wasn’t good enough for my fish since he decided to pass away and go to fish heaven (at least i hope that’s where he went). Although I’m not entirely sure that it was solely based on my poor choice of lights (HO bulbs) I’m pretty sure it was a BIG factor.

Anyways, the reason i write this post is to explain the importance of aquarium lights for your total aquarium setup. It’s important not just for the awesome look it gives but is crucial for your fish, plants and definitely your reef and corals. (Note: if you find this information new to you, don’t even think of buying reefs or corals, in fact don’t even go into salt-water territory yet. you’ll save a lot of money venturing and learning with freshwater first).

So now for the big question how is lighting important to your aquarium? Easy, light is essential for all living things, your fish included. Just take a look at me, when it’s bright and sunny outside i feel great and i’m usually cheerful, now make it a little gloomy and dark i feel horrible and sad for no reason at all. But staying out under the bright light of the sun all day isn’t helpful for me either, i need balance. Day and night. It’s the same for fish, the amount and intensity and duration of light they get is important. This goes to plants, corals and reefs too.

Now i bet your wondering what kind of light you should go out and buy right away. The answer, i don’t know. I don’t know because i don’t know what kinds of fish you have, what the dimensions of your fish tank is, what kind of decorations you have in there, and so on.

What i can do is to point you to my Aquarium Lights article.
