Joining forums about your particular hobby or interests is a great way to learn new things. This particular story on the origin of the popular goldfish bowl is just one example…
in China long ago, the goldfish was born, and it was good. the chinese people, seeing what they had created, marveled at it in wonderment, and wished to keep such creatures of beauty close to their homes. they knew that these creatures needed space to survive, and so created huge stone urns, and ponds, and all manner of wide open watery spaces for them to thrive and frolic. over time, many different forms evolved, that the chinese people became very proud of. they would frequently show off their prized speciments at galas, and important meals and banquets, where they would transfer the creature into a small glass bowl so their guests may also marvel at it. of course, the chinese knew that the creatures could not survive in such small spaces, and so once the event was over, the fish was placed back into its pond to be free again. and this continued happily for many years
then, a long time later, foreign men came, from far to the west, from the distant lands of “england” and “america”. diplomacy was in their best interest, and so the chinese held huge celebrations for their new friends from over the seas, showing off their most prized specimins in the age-old customs. however, the people of the west were not so smart, and upon returning home, took with them stories of beautiful fish, kept only in small glass bowls. the western men sought to have this for themselves. they created the glass bowls, and brought many golden fish over from the land of China, and thus, the humble goldfish, once reveared, was brought down to a humble existance living in tiny bowls…”
