So you’ve got your aquarium tank, now what?

Well this is the fun part - customizing your aquarium with aquarium tank supplies.

Here are some of the things you might just want to add to your fish tank:

Fish Tank Stand
If you don’t have a flat surface to put your aquarium tank on, get an aquarium tank stand instead. Be sure to get a sturdy one as a tank filled with water can be quite heavy. Check my “Aquarium Tank | things to consider” post to see the weights of common aquarium sizes. Also, if its a frame only, make sure to place the styrofoam base before setting the aquarium tank down. I had the unpleasant experience of learning this the hard way, when after setting my aquarium up and with fish inside, the bottom part gave in and cracked under pressure because i didn’t put the styrofoam base underneath.

Lastly, aquarium tank stands are also great places to store your fish food, water treatment chemicals, medicines and other supplies.

Aquarium Tank Cover | Aquarium Hoods
Fish don’t just swim, most jump out of the water and they do. I used to have these red colored fish and after every five minutes i’d see one of them on the floor. I’d pick them up and place them back in, but after a while another one would somehow get out. Get a tank cover or atleast a hood to prevent these fishes from jumping ship. Not as important, but also an addition, these tank covers and hoods also reduce the water evaporation rate. Most also have lights included.

Fish Tank Light
There is only one logical option to choose from when it comes to lighting your aquarium, and that is fluorescent lamps. They barely give off heat, are cheaper to run and are a bonus to your live plants.

Fish Tank Filters
Choosing a filter system isn’t as easy as it looks. For a more in-depth article check here. There are Mechanical, Biological and Chemical filtration systems available. The best ones are a combination of all three. There are also low-end and there are high-end filters too. And the aquarium filter system doesn’t just filter water, it’s also the determining factor of water movement in your tank. Again more on this here.

Aquarium Heater
Living in cold freezing temperatures or just have fish that’s more suitable for tropical water, aquarium heaters are you’re best bet. Make sure you get only what you need with a little allowance. Just because you can add 10 degrees more doesn’t mean you have too. You’ll end up spending more money up front and down the line in electricity costs.

Aquarium Chiller
Maybe you live in the warmer parts of the globe and you don’t need an aquarium heater. But you still need to regulate the water temperature in case it gets too hot for your fish. What you need now is an aquarium chiller. Similar to an air conditioner, there are some things to consider when getting a fish tank chiller.

Aquarium Gravel
There are almost endless choices when it comes to gravel. These literally comes from around the globe and comes in different sizes, textures and colors. Although there is some guidelines in choosing gravel, for a beginner it’s best you just play with your imagination and enjoy designing your aquarium.

Aquarium Plant - live or plastic
If this is your first aquarium, get plastic plants. They do their jobs pretty well, and that’s looking real. The fish don’t mind either. Getting live plants on the other hand can set you back a little more in terms of cash and requires a lot of maintenance and experience at first. But ultimately, the live plant gives the aquarium that real “living” feeling.
